Program Overview
Many people over 50 face unique barriers when returning to work — from managing health conditions to balancing caring responsibilities — and they often experience poorer outcomes from employment support services compared to younger jobseekers.
This program is designed to change that. It helps employability professionals better understand the challenges older jobseekers encounter and how to provide personalised, effective support to help them re-enter and thrive in the workforce. Covering a range of issues and practical resources, it equips learners with the skills to deliver meaningful, age-inclusive support.
On completion of the Over 50s Employability Support Accredited Learning Program, learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from the IEP and a digital badge to evidence their knowledge and skills.
Structure and Timings

Subjects Covered
Understanding Over 50s and Employment
Over 50s make up a third of the workforce – but those who fall out of work are at an increased risk of long-term unemployment. In the past, employment support has not worked well for this group. This module will help you understand some of the facts and statistics around unemployment for the over 50s, and explore the impact of challenges and barriers facing this group. In future modules we will outline ways in which you can appropriately support the over 50s on your caseload into suitable employment.
Skills Support for Over 50s
This module builds on what you have learnt in the previous module about the challenges facing over 50 jobseekers. It will help you understand the barriers over 50s face in seeking work, including confidence, qualifications, and access to training. It will suggest ways you might help over 50s on your caseload in overcoming these barriers.
Over 50s and Employers
This module explains how older workers may feel they are disadvantaged in the recruitment process, from the language used in recruitment adverts to discrimination at interview stage. It will also look at what makes good employment for over 50s, so if you are engaging with employers, you can help them understand what this age group needs.
Over 50s Common Challenges
Over 50s are likely to have additional challenges which will impact on job searching and employment opportunities. In this module we explore these challenges, in particular the common themes of health, caring, and financial need. We also explore how to support people who are experiencing these issues and how to appropriately signpost to support services.
