IEP Award in Motivational Interviewing for Employability

Program Overview

Learn how to build trust through boosting participants’ intrinsic motivation, address ambivalence and resistance, increase change talk, encourage stepping out of a comfort zone and support them in overcoming barriers through empathy-driven techniques.

Structure and Timings

3 x 3 hour online classroom sessions for bronze plus silver and gold activities.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understanding Motivational Interviewing (MI) Principles:
    • Learners will be able to define Motivational Interviewing and explain its core principles, including expressing empathy, developing discrepancy, rolling with resistance, and supporting self-efficacy. 
  2. Differentiate Between Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation:
    • Learners will understand the concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and how these types of motivation influence participants’ behavior and engagement in the job search process. 
  3. Applying Cognitive Evaluation Theory (CET):
    • Learners will be able to explain the components of Cognitive Evaluation Theory (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) and apply these principles to create supportive environments that enhance participants’ intrinsic motivation. 
  4. Utilise OARS Techniques:
    • Learners will demonstrate the ability to use OARS (Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening, and Summarising) techniques to facilitate effective communication and support participants in exploring their motivations and overcoming barriers. 
  5. Practicing Empathy in Participant Interactions:
    • Learners will practice and apply empathetic listening skills to build trust and rapport with participants, enhancing their motivation and engagement in the job search process. 
  6. Identifying and Responding to Change Talk and Sustain Talk:
    • Learners will be able to identify examples of change talk and sustain talk in participants’ statements and respond appropriately to encourage positive change and reduce resistance. 
  7. Addressing Ambivalence and Developing Discrepancy:
    • Learners will develop strategies to address participants’ ambivalence and highlight discrepancies between their current behaviors and future goals, facilitating a commitment to change. 
  8. Enhance Self-Efficacy in Participants:
    • Learners will implement practical strategies to build participants’ self-efficacy, empowering them to take control of their job search and achieve their career goals.
