Funded spaces are available exclusively for IPS services supporting people with severe mental illness (SMI), or those who have a mental health condition and complex needs. Alternative learning opportunities are available through IEP and IPS Grow for those delivering other IPS models, such as Connect to Work or substance misuse.*

We are excited to announce the launch of a brand-new Certificate in Individual Placement and Support (IPS), developed by the Institute of Employability Professionals (IEP) in collaboration with IPS Grow.

This pioneering qualification has been specifically designed to support Employment Specialists working with individuals who experience severe mental illness (SMI), delivering IPS services commissioned by NHS England. Built by sector experts, this qualification offers a new professional development pathway that recognises the vital work of IPS practitioners.

There are 600 funded spaces available between now and 2029, with the first cohort of approximately 40 learners launching in July 2025. There may be opportunities to expand this Certificate to additional cohorts and learners in future – discussions are being held due to the high demand in place.

Practitioners who have expressed early interest have highlighted the significant impact this qualification could have on their careers and their clients, with one commenting:

“I want to become better and more equipped at my job and would appreciate further training so I can support people in a more significant way.”

Others described how the qualification would validate their role and the broader IPS service:

“This role is fully deserving of being a professional qualification. It will validate the service and assist with recruitment too.”

Another shared:

“I love being an Employment Specialist. This qualification will enhance my knowledge to better support my clients and strengthen the IPS ethos.”

These powerful reflections underline the importance of recognising the expertise and professionalism of the IPS workforce as it continues to expand nationally.

Scott Parkin FIEP, Group CEO, Institute of Employability Professionals (IEP), said:
“This qualification is a game-changer. It’s been a couple of years in the making, and from the start, it was always clear that the IEP would be the natural partner to deliver this learning routeway for IPS practitioners working in clinical settings. The strength of our partnership with IPS Grow has been central to bringing this vision to life. We’re incredibly excited about what this will provide — not just for the individuals who will gain from the learning — but also for the IEP, as it marks the first time we’ve worked this directly and deeply in line with the health and employment sector. It’s a future-proofed opportunity to support the sector in a meaningful, lasting way.”

Mairi Fraser, Workforce Manager, IPS Grow Social Finance, said:
“At IPS Grow, we know how critical the role of the Employment Specialist is to the success of IPS delivery. This new Certificate in IPS not only builds confidence and skills but also provides a professional recognition that supports the growth and sustainability of the IPS workforce nationally. We’re proud to have worked closely with IEP to bring this to life.”
