The Benefits of Mental Health Technology

By Dr Kylie Henderson FIEP, Managing Director, The Better Health Generation

We are living in a world where many of us would be hard pressed not to have our phones, tablets or laptops by our side. Just watching the passing public walking down the street highlights the influence technology has on our day to day lives.

In current circumstances, the forecast of mental health may seem daunting, however technology is broadening horizons and transforming the way people think – and quickly! According to IQVIA, there are now over 318,000 health apps available in app stores worldwide, with an additional 200+ health apps added each day, this is nearly double the number of apps available just two years ago, posing possible confusion as to what is safe and effective for clients.

Video conferencing has been available for many years in both a corporate and clinical setting, and there is now significant evidence that video conferencing consultations are as effective as face-to-face interventions. This is especially true in remote areas, where people have limited access to health specialists and as a consequence must bear the additional costs of travelling to appointments.

Raising the bar to another level, having technology that is easily customised to each individual’s circumstances with the option of self-directed support is critical for those individuals who would prefer self-directed psychological and health intervention.

Whilst it is impossible to replace the human impact and relationships created, assistive technology can be used to promote early intervention for wellbeing and mental health issues, generating an increase in the effectiveness and potency of person to person interventions with clinicians. It is well known that health outcomes are improved when care teams work together and digital health solutions such as YourHealth+ makes this possible.

Taking this into consideration and the ever-changing times, embracing disruptive innovation and generating technological solutions that deliver positive experiences will allow you to reach, engage and deliver to more people and ultimately help them to achieve their full potential.
