Working in the employability sector is rewarding, but it’s also demanding. Caseloads are heavy, the challenges participants face are complex and there’s rarely much time to stop and think about whether you’re working in the most effective way you could be.

That’s precisely what the IEP Certificate in Employability Practice (CertEP) gives you the space to do.

An Assessor’s Perspective

I’ve supported many learners through the CertEP, watching them progress through the qualification and seeing them certificated at the end of it, is one of the more satisfying parts of my role. All that effort – fitted around an already busy job – recognised. For those who’ve produced particularly outstanding work, I’ve also been able to nominate them for the IEP CertEP Learner of the Year, which is a good way for the wider sector to acknowledge the quality of work happening on the frontline every day.

The qualification isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about giving practitioners the space, the structure and the support to reflect on what they do – and think about how they might do it better.

The Stories That Stick With You

I’ll admit it probably sounds a bit cheesy, but when a learner shares a success story about supporting someone back into work, the hairs on the back of my neck genuinely stand up. When you’ve got to know your learners over the course of the qualification – their challenges, their progress – you can picture yourself right there in that moment with them.

The social and collaborative sessions are a big part of what makes this work. They give learners a chance to share best practice, explore the learning together and realise that others are dealing with the same challenges. That peer element is something learners consistently find valuable – and it’s something you don’t always get from more traditional CPD.

What Learners Say

The feedback from those who complete the CertEP is pretty consistent. One learner described the immediate difference it made to their day-to-day work:

“Taking the course gave me the space and support to reflect on my practice and improve my skills – benefitting the people I supported and giving me back more time, because I had learned more effective ways of working.”

Another spoke about how the course filled gaps they didn’t even know they had:

“It opened my eyes to a lot of information I did not know myself and now that I do, I’m better informed to help others. It gave me the confidence to know what I would do if something arose – even things I hadn’t come across yet.”

And for many, it shifts how they handle the harder parts of the role:

“I no longer shy away from difficult or possibly conflictive conversations – and I’m able to signpost to other support agencies when needed.”

Yes, It Takes Time – But It’s Worth It

I won’t pretend the CertEP doesn’t ask something of you. Some learners do find it a challenge to fit the qualification around a busy job, and that’s a fair point. But the same learners tend to say, once they’re through it, that it was worth the effort:

“It’s still a huge part of my life – I still go back to it for reference. I’ll continue to proudly include it in applications; those skills are so transferable that I talk about it in everything.”

The Wider Impact

What’s also worth noting is that the learning doesn’t stay with just the individual. When a practitioner develops their skills, it tends to travel – to their managers, their colleagues and ultimately to the people they’re supporting to get into work.

“I’ve been able to help and support my fellow colleagues when they’re struggling – suggesting alternative ways to deal with the barriers their participants face.”

One more capable, reflective practitioner can make a real difference to a whole team.

So, Is It Worth It?

Career progression and job satisfaction are real outcomes of the CertEP. But what learners come back to most is something more straightforward – feeling better at their job and seeing that reflected in the progress of the people they support.

If you’re a frontline employability practitioner thinking about whether to take the next step, the CertEP is a good place to start!

The Certificate in Employability Practice is awarded by NCFE as a customised qualification. You can find out more at myiep.uk/ep
